Narayan Sai is an Indian spiritual leader, singer, lyricist and poet and the son of Asaram Bapu. Like his father, Narayan Sai was charged of sexual assault by two married sisters from Surat this year. The two sisters told Surat Police they were repeatedly raped by Narayan Sai in his ashrams, after which they fled. .

The Supreme Court  said gay sex between consenting adults is a criminal offence, a major setback for the largely closeted homosexual community in India. The court  set aside the Delhi High Court's 2009 judgement that homosexuality should not be treated as a criminal offence, which had been challenged by anti-gay rights activists, social and religious organizations..

Uttarakhand floods 2013:
A severe cloudburst centred on  Uttarakhand in June 2013 caused devastating floods and landslides in the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. From 14 to 17 June,  Uttarakhand and adjoining areas received heavy rainfall, which was about 375 percent more than the benchmark rainfall during a normal monsoon....



Madhya Pradesh temple stampede:
On 13 October 2013 during Navratri, at least 115 pilgrims, including 30 children were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede on a narrow bridge to the historic Ratangarh temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh. The worshippers were mainly from Datia and the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh...

Cyclone Helen: 

Cyclonic Storm Helen was a relatively weak tropical cyclone that formed in the Bay of Bengal region on November 18, from the remnants of Tropical Storm Podul. It was classified as Deep Depression BOB 06 by the IMD on November 19. As it was moving on a very slow northwest direction on November 20, it became Cyclonic Storm Helen as it brought light to heavy rainfall in eastern India. Muzaffarnagar riots:
Beginning on 27 August 2013, violent clashes took place between the Jat and Muslim communities of Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh following an eve-teasing incident which led to killing of two Jat youths.

The communal violence took a toll of 43 lives and injured 93. Curfew had to be imposed in Muzaffarnagar and other areas to curb violence...


Bihar Mid Day meal tragedy:
At least 23 children died and dozens more fell ill On 16 July 2013, at a primary school in the village of Dharmashati Gandaman in the Saran district of Bihar after eating  midday meal contaminated with pesticide.

Angered over the tragedy, villagers took to the streets in many parts of the district in protest...

Kumbh stampede:
A stampede broke out at the Allahabad station in Uttar Pradesh,  during the  Kumbh Mela,  killing 36 people and injuring at least 39 persons On 10 February 2013.

Poor crowd management by the station authorities and local police led to the stampede...

Bodh Gaya Blast:
A series of ten bombs exploded in and around the Mahabodhi Temple complex, on 7 July 2013.Bodh Gaya is a  UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bihar, revered by millions of Buddhists across the world.

Five people, including two Buddhist monks, were injured in the blasts. At a number of locations in Gaya three other devices were defused by bomb disposal squads...

India submarine blast:
A huge explosion and fire that crippled an Indian navy submarine INS Sindhurakshak in its home port of Mumbai on 14 August 2013.

It killed at least 18 sailors aboard. The  submerged submarine is yet to be taken out of water, and it carries warheads...


Patna Bomb blast:
On 27 October 2013, a series of bomb blasts rocked the city of Patna, Bihar at a massive election rally for BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

It was estimated that there were 300,000 participants at the "Hunkar" rally out of which six people were killed and 85 others were injured in eight bomb blasts...
